Former Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher believes that the Premier League will be hoping Liverpool doesn’t miss out on the title by a single point after the recent VAR controversy.
Jurgen Klopp has expressed his desire for a replay of Liverpool’s game against Tottenham, which included the controversial disallowance of Luis Diaz’s goal and subsequent revelations about the handling of the decision by the refereeing team.
Carragher, while disagreeing with the call for a replay, anticipates that league authorities will keep the issue in mind as the season progresses.
Jamie Carragher comments on Liverpool losing the title because of VAR
He suggests in his Telegraph column,
“The Premier League now finds itself in a position where it must hope Liverpool are not involved in another title race – or a push for Champions League football – which is decided by a single point.
The fact that Klopp has twice lost the Premier League title to Manchester City in such circumstances is undoubtedly on his mind. Nobody knows better than him that every point is crucial and is worth fighting for – especially when it has been denied your team because of reasons beyond your control.
Whether you agree with him or not, if that point is the difference between success and failure this season it is wishful thinking to believe that Klopp has said everything there is to say on the significance of last Saturday.”
The controversial offside call that denied Raheem Sterling a goal against Manchester City in the 2013-14 season and other contentious decisions in the 2021-22 season are still fresh in Liverpool’s memory.
Carragher expresses surprise that the referees during the Tottenham game didn’t halt the match to rectify the error, even though it was deemed impossible once the game had kicked off.
He emphasizes that VAR was designed to identify and correct “clear and obvious errors” rather than exacerbate them.
Carragher suggests that stopping the game to review the decision would have been a preferable outcome to the turmoil of the past six days.
Liverpool is my Religion and Anfield is my Church. 17th May 1996 the date I had my blood coloured red. The one you love the most you can not live without it and that is football to me.
