Recently, footage of Virgil van Dijk giving a shocking response to a Journalist reacting to referee decisions favoring Liverpool has resurfaced in the midst of ongoing VAR controversies.
Last Saturday, Liverpool’s Luis Diaz had a legitimate goal disallowed for offside by VAR, which was later acknowledged as a significant error by the VAR officials.
Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool’s manager, expressed that a replay would be the ideal solution to such situations but admitted that it’s unlikely to happen.
“Who Cares?” – Virgil van Dijk to Journalist
Meanwhile, a video from 2018 has emerged in which Van Dijk responded to a reporter’s question about controversial decisions in Liverpool’s Champions League semi-final win against AS Roma. Van Dijk nonchalantly replied, “Who cares?”
Regarding the recent VAR controversy, Van Dijk told the BBC
“I’m losing faith is difficult to say. The VAR should be absolutely clear and obvious with everything they’re deciding on. I’ve seen the still back, I think on live TV there were no lines being shown.
It’s all a bit strange, I don’t know who was in the VAR room and making that decision. It’s not a good thing, it doesn’t look well either. It is what it is, we lost.”
Klopp stressed the importance of handling such situations properly and noted that the officials didn’t make the mistake intentionally. He said,
“The audio did not change it at all, I was not interested in what things happened as I saw the outcome, we scored and it did not count.
It’s really important that as big as football is and important as football is we deal with it in a proper way. All the people involved, the on-field referee, linesman, fourth official and especially in this case VAR, didn’t do that on purpose. It was an obvious mistake and I think there would have been solutions for it afterwards.
Some people probably don’t want me to say, but not as the manager of Liverpool so much, more as a football person, the only outcome should be a replay. That’s how it is. It probably will not happen.”
Liverpool is my Religion and Anfield is my Church. 17th May 1996 the date I had my blood coloured red. The one you love the most you can not live without it and that is football to me.
