Jan Vertonghen, a former Tottenham Hotspur player, has joined in the banter with Spurs fans who are joking about replaying the 2019 Champions League final.
This playful exchange began after Tottenham’s recent 2-1 victory over Liverpool, which has been marred by controversial incidents.
During the match, Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota from Liverpool received red cards, and a key moment in the first half saw a fantastic goal by Luis Diaz disallowed due to a VAR communication breakdown.
Liverpool are upset about these events and has demanded that the audio of the VAR communication be made public.
Although the audio revealed communication issues, there was no evidence of anything more sinister.
Liverpool’s manager, Jurgen Klopp, publicly called for a replay of the game (as per Sky Sports), though it’s highly unlikely the Premier League will entertain that idea.
Jan Vertonghen response to the idea of replaying Liverpool vs Tottenham
Tottenham would strongly oppose such a request, especially considering Liverpool were playing with 10 men when the Diaz incident occurred.
In response, Spurs fans have been teasing Klopp, suggesting that if he wants to replay games due to bad refereeing decisions, then the 2019 Champions League final should be on the list.
In a light-hearted response, Jan Vertonghen, who played for Tottenham in that 2019 final, jokingly said, “count me in,” indicating that he’d be open to the idea of replaying that match if Klopp wants to open that debate.
Liverpool is my Religion and Anfield is my Church. 17th May 1996 the date I had my blood coloured red. The one you love the most you can not live without it and that is football to me.
