Liverpool midfielder Ryan Gravenberch has faced a setback in his international career as he remains on the outs with senior Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman.
Gravenberch declined an under-21 international call-up last month to concentrate on adapting to his new life at Liverpool after his £36.5 million transfer from Bayern Munich.
Consequently, he hasn’t represented the Dutch national team since his move to Anfield.
In November, Gravenberch won’t even be part of Koeman’s preliminary squad for the upcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers against the Republic of Ireland and Gibraltar.
Mike Vermijl on the side of Gravenberch to not offer an apology to Koeman
Koeman is reportedly looking for an apology from the young midfielder before considering his return to the national team.
However, some experts, like Dutch football analyst Mike Vermijl, believe that Gravenberch may stand his ground and not offer an apology.
Vermijl commented on a podcast, stating his surprise at Gravenberch’s absence from the squad.
He suggested that Koeman, known for his interpersonal skills, could have included Gravenberch in the provisional list to send a message of encouragement.
The refusal to apologize for his earlier decision to prioritize adjusting to life at his new club over representing the Dutch under-21 team might be a point of contention between Gravenberch and Koeman.
“I don’t think Gravenberch is there. That really surprises me.
Ronald Koeman is really a people manager. Instead of 26, you can also simply put 27 on the provisional list. This would send a signal to Gravenberch: hey boy, keep it up!
Maybe Koeman still blames him for that (the refusal to play for Jong Oranje). Perhaps Nigel de Jong (technical director of the KNVB) has not yet reached an agreement with Gravenberch about possible excuses.
I just don’t think Gravenberch is going to apologise. A player should also be able to say that he prefers to acclimatise at his new club over the Dutch Juniors.”

Gravenberch for Liverpool
Gravenberch has made an impressive start at Liverpool since joining the club. He was particularly outstanding during Liverpool’s 5-1 victory over Toulouse in the Europa League and caught the eye in their recent match against Nottingham Forest.
Despite being somewhat overlooked during Liverpool’s summer midfield overhaul, he has quickly established himself as a crucial player for the club.
Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool’s manager, praised Gravenberch’s performance after the Toulouse game, highlighting the player’s skills, including his exceptional first touch, acceleration with the ball, and strength in tight spaces.
Klopp believes that Gravenberch has significant room for improvement and that his youth is a promising sign for the future of the team.
Liverpool is my Religion and Anfield is my Church. 17th May 1996 the date I had my blood coloured red. The one you love the most you can not live without it and that is football to me.
