Former Liverpool players, Alvaro Arbeloa and Fernando Torres ignited on pitch scuffle over the weekend as one got the better of the other during a youth fixture in Spain.
The former Spanish teammates enjoyed two years together at Anfield during the Rafa Benitez era. While they played for Liverpool they finished in second place after battling for the title with Manchester United.
Since then, both have been into academy management. Alvaro is coaching Real Madrid’s youth team and Torres has the same role at Atletico Madrid.
Torres threatened his former Liverpool teammate, Alvaro before as well
Back when both used to play for the Madrid clubs, they were involved in an altercation. Torres had threatened his former teammate by saying: “I’ll blow your head off!”
However, it seems that those tensions haven’t completely subsided. The pair faced off each other again to spark ugly scenes in a historically fiery fixture.
What actually happened?
Fernando Torres’s side secured a 2-1 win over Arbeloa’s team and the manager chose to leave the field immediately. He didn’t offer to shake hands with his fellow countrymen after the final whistle.
A fight then broke out on the pitch with the Real Madrid players appearing to take exception to the nature of some of their opponents’ celebrations.
Similar to the senior level, at the youth level there is plenty of bad blood between the Madrid clubs. However, the rivalry got heated up and spilled out into the technical area once again on Sunday.
Both ex-Scousers have been into coaching since hanging up their boots, Torres in 2019 and Arbeloa in 2017.
Despite their shared allegiances with club and country, there seems to be no remorse for each other.
During the previous such encounter in May, Torres was sent off and it seems that the friendliness hasn’t been restored yet.
