Liverpool FC are edging closer to striking a deal with Ruben Amorim as their new manager after their star manager Jurgen Klopp announced his decision to leave Anfield after the 2023-24 season. The 39-year-old Sporting CP manager has expressed his intentions to strengthen the Liverpool squad with some of his trusted players, for example, Swedish striker Viktor Gyokeres.
The Portuguese coach sees Gyokeres as a player who can easily fit into his system. He may bring a blend of skill, versatility and goal-scoring ability to the squad.
With an approximate release clause of £86 million, Gyokeres will be a significant investment, but one that Amorim believes will pay dividends on the pitch.
However, getting his signature will not be a walk in the park. Sporting CP may be reluctant to part ways with one of their most valuable assets, especially when he was added to the squad just at the beginning of this season.
Whatever challenges are there for negotiations, Liverpool seem determined to make a compelling case for the transfer certainly.
Liverpool’s Attack is in Trouble
Recently Klopp’s side lost 0-3 at Anfield against Atlanta in the Europa League. Further, they were beaten 1-0 by the Eagles, a result that severely dents their Premier League title hopes.
Forwards Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, Mo Salah and Diogo Jota all featured and blew guilt-edged opportunities from close range.
If Amorim was watching Liverpool playing against Crystal Palace on Sunday, he must start thinking about the strikers to sign for Liverpool for improvement at once.
Also, the future of Liverpool’s key forward Mo Salah is very complex as reports regarding his contract and future at Anfield are not transparent at all.
If Salah makes a big money move to Saudi Arabia in the 2024/25 campaign, then who Amorim signs to replace the Egyptian winger will define his maiden season on Merseyside.
United vs Liverpool for Gyokeres
However, Liverpool are not home alone at all. Manchester United are also interested in the Swedish international.
Because the arrival of Gyokeres may lighten up the goal-scoring burden on Rasmus Højlund’s shoulder and him to develop without too much pressure at Manchester United.
Firstly, the Reds need a reliable finisher in the summer transfer window as Nunez and Gakpo have not been able to score goals consistently.
Also, Amorim has a specific style of play. And undoubtedly signing players who are already comfortable in Amorim’s system will be beneficial.
Further, Gyokeres is hailed as ‘unstoppable’ and his stats this season speak for himself. As can be seen, the 25-year-old striker has scored 36 times in 43 club games under Amorim at Sporting CP this season along with 16 assists.
