Liverpool are reportedly interested in signing Victor Osimhen from Napoli, as the Nigerian striker is yet to reach an agreement on a new contract with the Italian champions.
Osimhen currently earns approximately 4.5 million euros per season and is seeking a substantial increase to double his salary to 9 million euros per season, as per Calcio Mercato.
Osimhen was the top goal scorer in Serie A, helping Napoli secure their first league title in over three decades last season.
While he certainly deserves a significant pay rise, there appears to be a substantial gap between his salary demands and what the club is willing to offer.
Napoli’s president, Aurelio de Laurentiis, is also reportedly interested in including a release clause of £174 million (200 million euros) in the new contract.
The 24-year-old striker scored 31 goals in all competitions last season but is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury and has missed the last four games.
Liverpool and Chelsea in race to sign Osimhen
Liverpool have reportedly made significant efforts to sign Osimhen, and Chelsea are also monitoring the player.
However, some argue that Liverpool may not need to strengthen their attacking options at this time, especially in the center-forward or false number 9 position.
In their recent Premier League match against Nottingham Forest, Liverpool’s front three of Jota, Salah, and Nunez all scored goals.
Despite a disallowed goal by Dutch international Cody Gakpo, who came off the bench, and the absence of the in-form Luis Diaz, Liverpool’s attack seemed formidable.
Instead, it’s suggested that Liverpool should focus on strengthening their defense, especially after making improvements to their midfield during the summer transfer window.
In conclusion, the question of whether Liverpool needs to secure Victor Osimhen’s signing is debated, with the argument that their priority should be shoring up their backline.
