Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcantara has encountered another setback (injury) in his efforts to recover swiftly following hip surgery.
Manager Jurgen Klopp had previously confirmed that the Spanish midfielder is expected to make his return to action after the upcoming international break.
Thiago has yet to make an appearance for the Reds in the current season, and his return date remains uncertain.
Klopp has refrained from specifying a definite return date but expressed his hope to see Thiago back on the pitch soon.
The team is also dealing with the absence of young midfielder Stefan Bajcetic, who suffered a fresh injury setback shortly after his recent comeback.
Bajcetic was also anticipated to return after the international break.
On a positive note, Cody Gakpo, who left the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with a knee brace last weekend, is expected to make a relatively swift return to action soon.
Jurgen Klopp gives injury update on Liverpool midfielder
Klopp commented on Thiago’s setbacks, saying,
“It is just, for [Thiago] himself especially, annoying,”
Klopp told the club’s official website.
“He had now two setbacks in the rehab, not massive but enough to take him off the pitch again. Obviously not the same injury, not at all, but a bit similar,
It’s as annoying as it is for Stefan Bajcetic, who was there, played a few minutes and then played a few minutes and then felt something else. That’s how it is after long-term injuries from time to time.
Cody has a good chance that he will be back [after the break]. I will not put pressure on that [their returns] because I can’t anyway.
If they will be back after the internationals, we will see that. Hopefully, it would be cool.”
Thiago, a 32-year-old midfielder, is under contract with the club until 2024. However, it remains unclear whether Liverpool will extend his contract.
While there were reports linking him with Turkish clubs in the summer transfer window, Klopp was hesitant to let him go.
Given Liverpool’s sale of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho during the summer, Klopp believed Thiago’s experience was valuable.
However, ongoing injury struggles may impact Liverpool’s decision to extend his contract, and if a good offer arises in January, Liverpool might consider parting ways with him.
Thiago has made 97 appearances for Liverpool in all competitions since joining the club in 2020.
Despite their defeat against Tottenham, Liverpool have had a strong start in the Premier League and will face Brighton & Hove Albion in an upcoming away league match on Sunday.
