Liverpool could land European champion for a cut-price fee; Klopp’s a long-time admirer – report

Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Renato Sanches is being closely monitored by Liverpool as the French club looks to rebuild their team, according to sources.

While Jude Bellingham was their first choice, Liverpool’s interest in the Englishman was thwarted by Borussia Dortmund’s asking price.

Mason Mount, Alexis Mac Allister, and Joao Palhinha were among Liverpool’s other midfield targets, but now they are interested in Sanches after being made aware of his sudden availability.

Liverpool eyes Sanches for bargain transfer deal

Sanches played a starring role in Lille’s 2020/21 Ligue 1 triumph, and after spending one further season with Les Dogues, he completed a €13m move to PSG last summer. His signing was largely influenced by PSG’s sporting advisor Luis Campos, who he had worked under at Lille.

Despite being under contract in Paris until 2027, PSG has listed Sanches as a player who could be sold, and Liverpool believes they could sign him at a bargain price.

Other suitors for his signature might include Leicester City, Aston Villa, Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur, and Wolves, judging by previous reports.

Jurgen Klopp has long been a fan of the Portuguese player, having previously recommended him to the club before he joined PSG in 2022.

The Unpredictable Career of Renato Sanches

Sanches has struggled to secure game time this season, having only played 736 minutes of football across all competitions for PSG, and his only previous experience in the Premier League was an unsuccessful loan spell at Swansea City in 2017/18.

Renato Sanches is a player with an unusual career trajectory. While he has played for top teams like Bayern Munich and PSG, won the European Championships with Portugal, and won the Golden Boy award in 2016, he has also struggled with various moves and found it difficult to settle in with Bayern.

His time in the Premier League is best remembered for a bizarre moment in which he passed the ball directly to an advertising board, believing it to be a teammate.

PSG are apparently preparing to sell Sanches, and Liverpool are one of several Premier League clubs that are interested in signing him.

He is a player who is capable of lighting up the biggest stages, but he is also inconsistent, making Liverpool’s interest in him a risky move.
