Liverpool are worried that Mason Mount will sign a new contract with Chelsea this summer, according to journalist Graeme Bailey on 90min’s Talking Transfers podcast.
Mount to remain at Chelsea, Liverpool setback?
The 24-year-old midfielder has been linked with Liverpool for some time, but Bailey suggests that Liverpool’s decision-makers are no longer feeling optimistic about his move to Merseyside.
Bailey believes that the growing confidence at Chelsea will make Mount extend his stay at the club, especially if Mauricio Pochettino takes the Chelsea job.
Liverpool reportedly decided to back away from a potential move for Jude Bellingham, and missing out on Mount would be a further setback for the Reds.
Although Liverpool are eyeing Kalvin Phillips and will have other targets in mind, the fans will be hoping that the club can still pull something out of the bag.
Uncertainty over Mason Mount’s Contract
Fabrizio Romano has updated Liverpool fans on Mason Mount’s current circumstances, noting that his future will be discussed ‘in the next weeks’ amid reported interest from the Merseysiders.
Despite holding several rounds of discussions with the Chelsea hierarchy, Mount is yet to sign an extension with his boyhood club.
Mount is being strongly linked with Liverpool, with Arsenal, Manchester United, and Bayern Munich also stepping up their efforts to sign the player.
Chelsea have also mounted another offensive with regard to extending the player’s stay at Stamford Bridge, with ‘direct talks’ having taken place.
According to reports, Todd Boehly has spoken with Mount personally to persuade him to stay at Stamford Bridge.
The player, whose current contract is slated to end in 2024, has rejected all attempts to reach a contract agreement because he wants a long-term agreement while the Blues are only interested in one or two-year deals.
Lampard on Mount Situation
Lampard has confirmed that the Liverpool-linked midfielder is set to miss the rest of the season and that the conversations between the player and the club are ongoing.
Lampard made it clear that he is not involved in the negotiations and is in no position to impact the decision of the player or the club.
“At this point, it’s not my opinion that will be the resolution. It will be the opinion of the club and the opinion of Mason, so that’s between them.
I think my opinion is pretty clear, I don’t need to spell out what I think of Mason as a player, but it’s not my one to get into, that’s between them.”
he added.
Lampard has also defended Mount’s drop in form and insisted that the England international continues to be one of the best players in his position.
