Jurgen Klopp is reportedly interested in Borussia Dortmund’s Donyell Malen, a 24-year-old Dutch forward who has been performing well for Klopp’s former club.
Malen has scored three goals in five Bundesliga matches this season and was signed by Dortmund for around €30 million in 2021.
Before joining Dortmund, Malen spent time in Arsenal’s academy, and Klopp had been a fan of his talent even before his move to Germany.
Klopp sees Malen as an “ideal backup” for Mohamed Salah in Liverpool’s lineup.
Price Liverpool needs to pay for Donyell Malen
According to German publication SportBILD, Liverpool would need to offer €60 million (£52 million) to potentially sway Dortmund, as Malen is under contract with the club until 2026.
Liverpool already have a significant Dutch presence, with Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo, and Ryan Gravenberch joining the squad earlier in the year.
Malen, who can play as a striker or right winger, had a successful previous season in the Netherlands, scoring 27 goals in 45 games.
While Liverpool currently have 17-year-old Ben Doak as a backup for Salah on the right wing, there are uncertainties about Salah’s future, with interest from the Saudi Pro League.
Salah’s contract expires in 2025, and there is speculation that this could be his last season at Liverpool.
The club may consider a significant transfer offer for him next summer rather than risking losing him for free.
The Merseysiders might be lured by a £200M+ bid as earlier reports suggested that Al Ittihad wanted to make Salah Saudi Pro League’s most expensive player.
Thus, the Reds are already preparing themselves for the post-Salah era at Anfield. And Donyell Malen could turn out to be a good replacement if not the perfect one.
While we have to wait and see how Ben Doak performs in the upcoming years.
