Former Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor applauds Szoboszlai and believes that Liverpool have the potential to challenge teams like Arsenal and Manchester City for the Premier League title this season if their defense can regain its formidable reputation.

Agbonlahor praised Dominik Szoboszlai as one of the standout summer signings but expressed a need for midfielder Alexis Mac Allister to step up his performance.

‘I’m telling you’: Ian Wright predicts who will win this weekend – Liverpool or Tottenham

The Reds have made a strong start to the Premier League season, accumulating 16 out of a possible 18 points, with their only dropped points coming from a draw against Chelsea in the season opener.

Despite recent setbacks, including the suspension of Virgil van Dijk and an injury to Ibrahima Konate, both players have now returned to the matchday squad.

Liverpool’s last Premier League title victory was in the 2019-20 season when they finished 18 points ahead of Manchester City, ending a 30-year drought.

This season, Liverpool will also be competing in the Europa League and have already won their opening group match against LASK.

La Liga president says £166m star’s transfer is nearly decided, after claims he’d love to join Liverpool

Gabby Agbonlahor on Szoboszlai

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider,

“I think Liverpool can definitely challenge Arsenal and Man City. Their squad looks very good at the moment.

Defensively, that’s the only question for me at the moment.

Szoboszlai has been one of the signings of the summer. I can’t believe how quick he is for a central midfielder, it’s frightening.

He’s very good technically, very high energy.

Mac Allister has to wake up. He’s not showing the standard of performance we saw in the World Cup.

I think Liverpool have got to get Van Dijk and Konate up to speed again and get back to that defensive unit that people were afraid of a couple of years ago.

They were frightening, teams were scared to attack them when they looked at the back four.”
