Tim Sherwood Shocked By Liverpool’s Bid For Benteke

Former Aston Villa manager, Tim Sherwood recounted the Premier League club, Aston Villa’s astonishment when Liverpool captured the sign of Christian Benteke in 2015, in spite of Tim Sherwood putting his effort to take him out of Liverpool’s hands at that time.

Sherwood revealed his attempts to talk Liverpool off the deal and he also said how he was shocked then by the fee that Liverpool offered for him in 2015.

Disbelief Of The Former Villa Manager

Tim Sherwood shares his disbelief at that point in time when Liverpool came in for Beneteke with a huge bid. He said,

“At the end of the season Brendan called me and said he was going to sign Christian,I tried my best to put him off.

I remember ringing the chairman and I told him Christian is going. And he said ‘you’re joking me?

It wasn’t like, ‘you’re joking we don’t want to lose him.’ It was like ‘You’re joking, nobody is paying that?’”

This shows how Time Sherwood was bamboozled by the Liverpool recruitment bid at that time.

A Tale To Remember

Benteke’s time at Liverpool commenced on a promising path, with memorable eye-catching performances which included a winner on his debut.

However, injuries and a lack of consistency led to his decline at Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp.

Benteke wasn’t up to the standards of what a club of Liverpool’s stature beckons and ended up moving to another Premier League club Crystal Palace.

Liverpool’s investment was surpassing Aston Villa’s record at the time, leaving both clubs on the losing side and also the player struggled to find his form after an initial purple patch that lasted a few games.

This deal serves as a thing to look back and a lesson to remember for Liverpool’s recruitment team as they step into a very crucial summer transfer window ahead.
