Simon Jordan has branded conspiracy theories based on the choice of referee for the Liverpool vs Manchester City clash as a ‘ridiculous scenario’.
Chris Kavanagh will take charge of Saturday lunchtime’s crunch clash at the Etihad Stadium. But the ref’s birthplace has seen some fans call his involvement in the top-of-the-table clash into question.
The ref was born in Ashton-under-Lyne in Greater Manchester, just five minutes from Etihad Stadium. This has caused some stir amongst Liverpool supporters on social media.
Liverpool fans angry at the ref selection for Manchester City clash
The 38-year-old has been a part of a select group of referees to officiate in the Prem since 2017. Despite his close proximity to the Etihad, Kavanagh is not a known Manchester City supporter.
However, the former Crystal Palace owner Jordan hit out at those questioning Kavanagh’s appointment. Moreover, he backed the PL in their decision to appoint him in this fixture, while talking to talkSPORT.
“I’m assuming they would have done their appropriate checks and balances and understanding who they are putting in place to referee games.
If we’re going to make decisions based upon social media then we’re not going to get very far, so I think it’s a ridiculous scenario.
If you wanted to look into most situations you could find some index into something you might find unpalatable or unfair or disadvantageous to you.”
Would there be another referee incident for the Reds?
Chris Kavanagh would be hoping that this weekend’s clash passes by without any major incident.
Indeed it has been a challenging period for the referees and Liverpool have claimed themselves to be victims of unfair decisions.
The PGMOL have come under scrutiny of late for a number of contentious decisions involving VAR. Moreover, both Klopp and Pep have had exchanges with Chris in the past.
All parties hope for a good game of football which would be remembered for nothing negative.
