Alexis Mac Allister has shed light on the post-match incident (Between Pep & Nunez) at the recent 1-1 draw between Liverpool and Manchester City, explaining why he was amused by the situation.
Following the game, Pep Guardiola and Darwin Nunez were involved in a heated exchange near the touchline, with Jurgen Klopp intervening to calm the situation.
Mac Allister, the 24-year-old Argentine midfielder, shared with Clank! that the exchange between Guardiola and Nunez was “nothing serious” and he found it “funny.”
Klopp asked Mac Allister about the Pep and Nunez feud
According to Mac Allister, Klopp inquired about the altercation, but it was a minimal and somewhat humorous exchange.
He revealed that it started with a comment from Guardiola about luck after a missed chance from City, to which Nunez responded when Liverpool had their opportunity.
The Uruguay international responded “ah, now you are the ones who are lucky” after Luis Diaz missed the header at the end.
Despite the tension, Mac Allister emphasized that both Guardiola and Nunez respect each other, and the incident was not as serious as it may have seemed.
Mac Allister also recounted an earlier incident when Guardiola commented on luck during a play involving Erling Haaland, setting the stage for the later exchange.
The midfielder highlighted the seemingly lighthearted nature of the situation, indicating that it was not a cause for concern.
Even before Mac Allister’s explanation, the altercation between Nunez and Guardiola appeared minor, with the situation quickly defusing.
Guardiola downplayed the incident when addressing the media afterwards. Mac Allister’s perspective, as a Spanish speaker who understood the exchange, reinforces the idea that the disagreement was a brief and inconsequential moment in the context of a football match.
Contrary to fears that Nunez’s temper might escalate, as it did in a previous season, where he was sent off for a headbutt, the incident at the Etihad Stadium seemed to be nothing more than a typical, fleeting argument that occurs during matches.
It did not indicate the onset of a prolonged feud between Nunez and Guardiola.
Liverpool is my Religion and Anfield is my Church. 17th May 1996 the date I had my blood coloured red. The one you love the most you can not live without it and that is football to me.
