Liverpool owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), have reportedly made a substantial bid to expand their sports portfolio.
FSG, based in Boston, already owns the Boston Red Sox (a Major League Baseball team), the Pittsburgh Penguins (a National Hockey League team), and RFK Racing in NASCAR.
They also ventured into golf earlier this year by acquiring a franchise in the new Technology Golf League, Boston Common Golf, which will start its season in January.
The golfing world has recently seen division with the establishment of LIV Golf, a breakaway from the PGA Tour backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.
This has led to major golfers like Phil Mickelson, Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson, and Bryson DeChambeau making controversial moves, causing strained relationships.
In June, it was announced that the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour (formerly the European Tour) were working towards forming a unified commercial entity with LIV Golf, with a deadline set for December 31 to finalize the deal.
However, reports suggest that little progress has been made, and negotiations are at risk of falling apart.
FSG are said to be in discussions with the PGA about a potential investment deal, with golf journalist Alan Shipnuck revealing that FSG, led by John Henry, has made a significant offer.
Shipnuck noted that the framework agreement appears to be unraveling, and FSG’s bid aims to challenge the involvement of the Public Investment Fund.
Shipnuck wrote on X:
“From talking to folks on Wall St. and in Silicon Valley who are close to the deal, the framework agreement is falling apart. Fenway Sports Group has put in a monster bid to usurp the PIF. It looks increasingly likely we go back to LIV vs. the Tour.”
This development could lead to a situation where LIV Golf competes against the traditional PGA Tour.
Additionally, reports indicate that the Endeavour Group, owners of World Wrestling Entertainment and the Ultimate Fighting Championship, had their investment offer rejected by the PGA Tour.
