Two of Italy’s prominent football clubs, Inter Milan and Juventus, are considering the possibility of signing Liverpool’s midfield star, Thiago Alcantara, on a free transfer when his contract with Liverpool expires in the summer of 2024.
Since joining Liverpool in 2020, Thiago Alcantara has shown his exceptional skills on the field.
However, he has been plagued by injuries, which have limited his playing time and had an impact on Jurgen Klopp’s team as well.
While Klopp values the Spanish international, there have been no discussions about extending his contract, and Liverpool have a history of parting ways with older players, as seen in the 2023 summer transfer window.
Despite being 32 years old and dealing with persistent injuries, Thiago remains a top-tier player capable of delivering outstanding performances.
The midfielder has also taken on a mentoring role for younger players as the Reds undergo a midfield overhaul.
Inter Milan & Juventus keen on signing Thiago
With no new contract on the horizon, Inter Milan and Juventus have expressed interest in Thiago as a potential free agent in 2024, as per Italian outlet Calciomercato.
Acquiring his services would be a significant coup for either club, as Serie A offers a slower-paced and less physically demanding environment compared to the Premier League, potentially prolonging Thiago’s career and adding to his trophy collection.
If Liverpool were to let Thiago go, Wataru Endo would become the most experienced player in the midfield.
While Endo is a leader and a positive influence, Thiago’s experience at top clubs like Barcelona and Bayern Munich sets him apart.
He also understands the significance of wearing the Liverpool jersey, making him a valuable asset both on and off the field.
Retaining Thiago could benefit the development of young talents like Ryan Gravenberch, Stefan Bajcetic, Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliott, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Alexis Mac Allister.
There’s a strong argument for Liverpool to extend Thiago’s contract, even if it means reduced playing time.
His influence remains crucial to Liverpool’s rebuilding efforts, and hopefully, Jurgen Klopp will be able to retain him, preventing another veteran’s departure on a free transfer.
