Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold could face disciplinary actions for his celebration after scoring against Manchester City and for post-match comments.
The Merseysiders drew the most-anticipated match of the season against Manchester City on Saturday. This meant that both the teams had to share a point each which took the Blues to 29 points and the Reds to 28 points.
Although the Anfield giants are currently 3rd on the points table, they shared a point with potential title rivals. And the craftsman who scored the crucial equalizer was none other than vice-captain Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Speaking at the post-match interview, the English international elaborated on the match saying,
“There’s been many times we’ve played a lot better against City and lost the game. So to come here and get the point is a good result for us, if I’m honest.
It’s something we needed as a team. It instills that belief that, even when we don’t play well against the champions – they just won a treble last year and they’re top of the league – if you can’t play well and still get a point against them, we’ve done something right.”
Alexander-Arnold could face disciplinary actions for celebration in Man City vs Liverpool
However, the star fullback can possibly face disciplinary actions as he celebrated his goal by ‘shushing’ the City supporters.
When a reporter asked him in the post-match interview why he did that, he simply said because it was ‘funny’.
But as per The Sun, his admission that he celebrated that way purposefully in front of the City fans could land him in trouble with the FA.
The laws of the game state that any player must be booked if they are found ‘gesturing or acting in a provocative, derisory or inflammatory way’ towards members of the crowd.
However, the referee of the game, Chris Kavanagh, did not show a yellow card to the 25-year-old. And it is also unclear whether he saw it happen. The report also added that the Merseyside defender might be only warned this time.
He might also be warned about his future conduct and FA can take action from the next time onwards. And there were no appeals for sanction after the incident happened live.
An ardent football fan and a proud Red. I take immense pleasure in analyzing the intricacies of the game.
