Liverpool midfielder James Balagizi has seen an already frustrating loan spell at Wigan hampered by a long-term injury, which could see him return early.
Balagizi joined League One side Wigan on a season-long loan. He came off of an impressive loan spell with Crawley last term as he scored 3 goals in 16 games.
However, that hasn’t been the case this time as he his time at DW Stadium has been disappointing. The 20-year-old has played only 4 times at senior level and failed to start once in the league.
Liverpool player on loan, James Balagizi could return as Wigan plans to terminate his contract
Manager, Shaun Maloney left the midfielder out of his squad but started him in one of his last 13 games. Unfortunately, James has now been ruled out for at least 6 weeks due to an injury.
Moreover, Wigan is now considering terminating his contract and sending him back to Anfield earlier than expected.
While talking to the Wigan Observer, manager Shaun Maloney spoke about the injury.
“James damaged his hamstring in training, very innocuous, but it doesn’t look a very good one.
We’re probably looking at around six weeks for him, which isn’t good news. We’ll allow him and Liverpool to decide what happens.”
The midfielder went through a similar issue last year as he had to undergo surgery. It was an injury that ended his time at Crawley, mid-season.
Although there is no confirmation yet whether Liverpool will recall the player in January, the belief is that it would be the best course of action for all parties.
Moreover, James is out of Maloney’s plans and a second half with the Liverpool U21s would be much beneficial.
Balagizi’s injury problems have denied him a chance in Jurgen Klopp‘s first-team squad in the past. An arm issue kept him out of pre-season training in 2021.
He was named on the bench for the Carabao Cup clash with Norwich and the FA Cup win over Shrewsbury that season. However, he failed to make a senior debut with the Reds.
