Liverpool have been on the end of numerous VAR controversies this season alone, and Klopp has had his say on the technology.
The most recent victim of VAR is Arsenal after the goal was given to West Ham. The ball had seemingly crossed the line to be out of play before Soucek scored their first goal.
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp shares his thoughts on VAR
The January transfer window approaches, and teams are ready to dive into the market for reinforcements halfway through the season. Meanwhile, Klopp has openly shared his thoughts on the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system.
The technology has again been in the headlines after the recent game between West Ham and Arsenal. The controversy arose when Tomáš Souček of West Ham scored the opening goal at the Emirates.
However, doubts were raised about whether Jarrod Bowen had managed to keep the ball in play before passing it to his teammate.
Despite these concerns, the on-field referee gave the goal as VAR lacked a definitive camera angle to come to a conclusion. However, the Hammers’ victory was confirmed when Konstantinos Mavropanos scored a second goal.
Meanwhile, Klopp shared his perspective on VAR ahead of Liverpool’s match against Newcastle.
“I really don’t think that I should answer this question.
It’s not that you use me, [it’s that] I give you the opportunity too often to use my phrases. It’s not interesting anymore and it doesn’t help.”
Moreover, Klopp continued his thoughts and voiced his scepticism about the ongoing debates over VAR’s efficacy.
However, he wasn’t too happy about scrapping VAR entirely as well.
“Oh my god! Take VAR away? No. Use VAR better is probably the right thing. I think it could be done.”
Reds to end in top spot this year
After Arsenal’s loss to West Ham, Klopp’s side remained on top of the pile at the campaign’s halfway point. Focusing on the next game, Klopp emphasised the importance of Diogo Jota’s return from injury, especially with his goal against Burnley.
“He’s a very smart footballer. He understands the game on a different level, definitely. He sees situations slightly earlier, adapts to things quicker.”
Furthermore, he highlighted Jota’s ambidexterity and exceptional finishing skills, expressing hope for his long-term presence on the team.
Liverpool are currently 2 points ahead of Arsenal and could extend this gap to 5 points. The Magpies sit in 9th place and are presently experiencing a dip in form. Hence, it should be a straightforward victory for the Reds.
