Liverpool loanee Rhys Williams will return to Anfield this January after an unsuccessful temporary stint at Aberdeen in the Scottish Premiership.
The 22-year-old has struggled since moving to Scotland last summer and has made no senior appearance. He has played mainly in the club’s B team.
The Englishman suffered an injury early in the campaign with Aberdeen and has failed to leave an impression. The defender has hence found himself down the pecking order.
Rhys Williams to end his stint at Aberdeen to return to Liverpool
The England U21 famously partnered Nat Phillips in the closing stages of the 2020-21 campaign for the Reds. Moreover, he has previously made loan moves to Swansea City and Blackpool, with varying degrees of success. However, he hasn’t been able to catch the eye of Aberdeen coach Barry Robson.
As per Daily Record, Williams will cut his loan short and return to Liverpool next week. However, during this January transfer window, he is expected to make another exit upon his arrival at Anfield, either a loan or a permanent move.
The defender, who would turn 23 this February, has slim chances of featuring for Klopp at Anfield. Although he played 19 times under Klopp back in 2020 owing to the Reds’ injury crisis, it would appear he has no future in the Liverpool squad.
Meanwhile, the Preston-born centre-back is not the only defender struggling north of the English border. Nat Phillips also finds life difficult during his loan deal with Celtic.
Phillips’ loan expires in January, and he has made just 8 first-team appearances for the Scottish champions. He is another Liverpool player likely to leave Anfield in the near future.
Although the Reds are searching for another defender, it seems like Klopp is looking for new faces. The Reds are heavily linked to Sporting Lisbon defender Goncalo Inacio.
