Hungary captain, Dominik Szoboszlai joined Liverpool in the summer transfer window and has become an essential player for the Reds ever since.
The £60m man was signed out of nowhere as the Reds triggered his release clause to get him to Anfield. Since then, the versatile player has been exceptional for Klopp.
Moreover, at the tender age of 23, the midfielder is the captain of his national team and has also put in great performances for Hungary.
Liverpool have a gem in Szoboszlai: Barnes
While talking to This Is Anfield YouTube channel, John Barnes shared his delight over the Liverpool midfielder.
He said that the likes of Manchester City or Arsenal would have never known about Szoboszlai. Moreover, Liverpool is the only team to see the potential of a player like Szoboszlai.
“Who would’ve known much about Dominik Szoboszlai beforehand? I’m sure City wouldn’t have looked at him or Arsenal, but with the way he plays in terms of what we want, that’s what we do, so yes it’s pleasing and it’s not a surprise, and we are well in the title challenge.”
Although many fans would like to agree with this statement, those who follow football knew Szoboszlai before his move to Anfield. He was also a star player at Leipzig and was courted by many elite teams.
Moreover, regarding unearthing gems, Arsenal and Manchester City have their share of findings. For example, the likes of Martinelli, Tomiyasu, and Gabriel Magalhaes were unknown before their move to the Emirates. Likewise, Julian Alvarez and Jeremy Doku are great examples of Manchester City.
Hence, although the PL rivals failed to secure the signing of Szoboszlai, they would’ve known his prowess. Meanwhile, Liverpool acted quickly and secured the Hungarian’s services.
However, as Szoboszlai has proven to be a fantastic signing, Barnes has a point. The Liverpool recruitment team has done a great job once again.
