Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher has commented on the penalty shout in the Liverpool vs Brighton match which left the Sky Sports presenter stunned.
The match between the Merseysiders and the Seagulls ended in a disappointing 2-2 draw for the former side.
After the 8th game of the PL, the Anfield giants stand 4th with 17 points below Tottenham, Arsenal, and Man City respectively.
The game started off with Brighton constantly threatening the Reds goal with a non-stop attack. Liverpool again conceded first as Alexis Mac Allister made a mistake in a half-turn.
And Simon Adingara made no mistake in beating Alisson to put Albion in front.
Although Mohamed Salah equalized in the 40th minute and soon converted a penalty to secure the lead, a goal by Lewis Dunk in the later minutes of the second half leveled things up and it ended up in a draw.
Dermot Gallagher on penalty shout in Liverpool vs Brighton
A wayward shot from Brighton’s Kaoru Mitoma struck the arm of Virgil van Dijk in the penalty area. However, referee Anthony Taylor turned down all the appeals from the Seagull players.
His decision infuriated Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi and he was shown a yellow card for dissent.
While making his regular appearance on Ref Watch, the former PL referee agreed with the referee’s decision on the incident. He stated,
“The evidence is there for everyone to see. It clearly strikes his thigh. His arm is by his side. It bounces up a few feet.
It hits him, there’s no doubt about that, but you’d be absolutely stunned if a penalty was given for that.”
Gallagher’s reaction astonished the Sky Sports presenter in the studio who replied with a gasp, ‘Really?’.
The refereeing standards in the PL have already been under severe scrutiny due to recent incidents.
In this scenario, the decision by Anthony Taylor was the right one. Hopefully, refereeing standards will soon improve effectively.
An ardent football fan and a proud Red. I take immense pleasure in analyzing the intricacies of the game.
