The first summer signing by Liverpool, Alexis Mac Allister didn’t have the best game against Brighton and a few have suggested that he could be dropped next game.
The 24-year-old has been decent since joining Klopp’s side but has been deployed as a number 6 in the deep-lying midfield role. Although it isn’t his natural position, the Argentine has done justice to the role so far.
However, his return to AMEX proved to be a tough one as his error led to De Zerbi’s side equalizing.
Although the Reds managed to not lose the game and his captain backed his midfielder, many critiqued his performance.
He has been called out for his holding-midfield performance and many said that he didn’t look comfortable.
Mac Allister: should he be dropped by Liverpool?
Although the Argentine was sub-par on the South Coast, he had a better second half. He won the ball to initiate the equalizer for the Reds and put in a better shift in the second half.
As per FBref, he ranks among the top 16% of midfielders across Europe’s top 5 leagues for successful take-ons.
Also, he is in the top 18% for progressive carries and the top 17% for shot creations. Moreover, he ranks in the top 30% for progressive passes per 90.
But it wasn’t just the midfielder, left-back Andy Robertson also had an afternoon to forget. He was constantly troubled by the mercurial Simon Adingra and was also at fault for Dunk’s equalizer.
The Scotland captain has been in fine fettle this season but will leave little applause after that match.
Although he will surely retain his starting spot on the left despite Kostas Tsimikas‘ recent contract extension.
But the same couldn’t be said about Mac Allister despite Curtis Jones serving a 2-match-ban.
Moreover, the multi-functional Gravenberch has been waiting for his maiden start. But he has put in great performances whenever called upon.
Also, Endo could be a more versatile option and could offer a more defensive angle to Klopp’s midfield.
Ultimately, Liverpool are in a fine position and could kick on with a series of victories against upcoming opponents.
As for Mac Allister, he would have more freedom if deployed higher while Endo lies deep in the midfield.
