According to ESPN pundit Steve Nicol, Liverpool’s defensive vulnerabilities are primarily attributed to the performances of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Kostas Tsimikas.
Despite Liverpool’s strong position in the league, Nicol contends that the defensive duo is not up to par, echoing concerns that have surrounded Alexander-Arnold’s defensive abilities for some time.
Jurgen Klopp’s team has received praise for their overall standing in the league, currently sitting in second place with only one loss in 14 Premier League games.
However, their defensive capabilities came under scrutiny following a 4-3 victory over Fulham, where they conceded three goals at Anfield.
Nicol concurs with Craig Burley’s assessment that Liverpool’s defensive issues stem from having two subpar defenders in Alexander-Arnold and Tsimikas.

Nicol emphasized the impact of having half of the back four as weak defenders, suggesting that it’s not surprising for a team to give up chances and goals under such circumstances.
“I do agree because right now, Alexander-Arnold and Tsimikas are not good defenders.
If you’ve got half of your back four who are not good defenders, it shouldn’t really be a surprise that you’re giving up chances and goals.”
Said Nicol on ESPN FC.
Despite Liverpool’s impressive statistic of conceding only 14 goals in the league, Nicol argues that this number is somewhat misleading.
He attributes their defensive vulnerabilities to a lack of a proper defensive midfielder, making it easier for opposing teams to create scoring opportunities.
Nicol suggests that acquiring a top-quality defensive midfielder in the January transfer window could significantly bolster Liverpool’s defensive solidity, even considering the perceived weaknesses of Alexander-Arnold and Tsimikas.
