Tim Sherwood believes that Liverpool are likely to win the Merseyside derby against Everton, but he acknowledges that Everton could pull off a victory if everything falls into place for them.
Speaking on the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast, Sherwood emphasized that form still matters in derby clashes.
Everton is set to face Liverpool at Anfield, and Sherwood commented that while Everton has gained some confidence, it’s not realistic to claim that form doesn’t matter in these matches.
He stated that if Liverpool plays well, they should secure the win, but for Everton to have a chance, they would require several factors to align, including favorable refereeing decisions and a dose of luck.
Sherwood’s assessment might seem tough, considering that Everton has not been the favored team in a Merseyside derby for a considerable time, and wins have been scarce.
While Carlo Ancelotti managed to secure a rare derby win for Everton in 2021, their first at Anfield since 1999, it might be a challenge for Sean Dyche to replicate such a feat.
Tim Sherwood predicts Merseyside Derby
Nevertheless, Sherwood’s view that Everton’s chances rely heavily on everything going their way may be overly critical.
“I mean, seriously, at the moment we’ve had one derby this year and that’s been the Tottenham-Arsenal game.
I think now, this should not be competitive, this football match. They’ve picked up a little bit more confidence at Everton. Everyone says in these games that form goes out the window – that’s a load of nonsense.
If Liverpool play well, they’ll win the football match. If everything goes right for Everton, they’ve possibly got a chance, but they’d need the referee to be on their side, they’d need a load of luck for them to get a result.
That’s the way I see it. It is a mismatch at the moment.”
Sherwood said.
Despite their struggles, Everton have displayed good performances and has been effective in creating goal-scoring opportunities.
Statistically, their expected goals per 90 minutes are even better than Liverpool’s, with Everton at 1.78 and Liverpool at 1.60, suggesting they have a chance to score and potentially secure all three points.
A victory against their rivals would greatly boost the morale of Everton’s fanbase, who have concerns about their club’s financial situation and the reliability of prospective new owners.
While Anfield is always electric for a derby, Liverpool will be determined to secure three points to maintain their position in the top four.
