Reports from Italy have highlighted strong interest from Liverpool in Napoli’s talented striker, Victor Osimhen.
Osimhen’s current contract with Napoli is set to run until 2025, but Napoli’s president, Aurelio De Laurentiis, has suggested a potential change of heart regarding a contract extension.
According to Italian journalist Valter De Maggio, Liverpool’s interest appears to be the driving force behind the 24-year-old’s decision not to pursue a contract extension with Napoli.
De Maggio reveals that Osimhen and his agent, Roberto Calenda, have opted against renewing their commitment to Napoli due to Liverpool’s interest.
Liverpool reaches agreement with Osimhen
De Maggio goes on to explain that Liverpool and Osimhen have already reached an agreement, and the next step is to negotiate a deal with Napoli to facilitate the transfer.
He stated,
“The parties had reached an agreement for the renewal, but then Calenda and Osimhen went back on their word. What happened? There was the inclusion of another club, from the Premier League. I’m talking about Liverpool,”
The journalist further added:
“There would be frequent contacts, but I just learned something else: there would be agreements already reached. Let me clarify: the agreements would be between the Reds and the player, therefore they would not involve Napoli. I hope Laurentiis will be able to keep Victor Osimhen at least until June, but we can’t be sure.”
The accuracy of De Maggio’s claim about Liverpool’s interest remains to be confirmed by other sources in the Italian media.
Notably, Osimhen, the Nigeria international, joined Napoli from Lille in 2020, and it has been revealed that Liverpool expressed interest in signing him during the same transfer window, as disclosed by his agent, Calenda.
Osimhen had an impressive season, contributing 31 goals and five assists to help Napoli secure the title. In the current season, he has already scored six goals and provided one assist in 10 games.
