Liverpool defender and young Dutchman Sepp van den Berg is expected to make a step up into the first-team under Arne Slot.

Along with Jurgen Klopp’s Anfield exit and Arne Slot’s takeover, Liverpool will also experience the return of many loaned out players.

The list consists of names like Fabio Carvalho, Tyler Morton, Calvin Ramsay, Rhys Williams, Nathaniel Phillips and Sepp van den Berg.

Among all these names, the player who has impressed everyone during his loan spell has been Van den Berg.

The Dutch defender joined Bundesliga side Mainz last summer on a season-long loan deal which assured him the necessary game time needed for development and he did not disappoint at all.

The 22-year-old proved his worth in the German domestic league as he averaged 1.2 tackles and 1.3 interceptions per game while scoring 2 goals across 31 appearances (stats correct as of 07.05.24) (stats via WhoScored).

Sepp Van Den Berg Into Liverpool First-Team

The loan stint at Mainz has been the youngster’s third loan spell since joining the club back in 2019 from Dutch side Zwolle aged 17.

Before joining the German side last summer, Van den Berg had been on loan to English side Preston North End in 2021 where he earned ‘excellent’ tag from manager Alex Neil after his debut game.

In the 2022-23 season, the Dutchman moved to German giants Schalke on a season-long loan deal.

Even though Sepp donned the senior Reds outfit for the first time under Jurgen in 2019 against MK Dons in Carabao Cup, he only managed to get four appearances across his entire Liverpool career.

Slot taking charge of LFC might change Van den Berg’s career trajectory. The Merseysiders are already suffering from lack of adequate defensive options.

The young Dutch defender’s addition to the first-team could solve this problem for the club. Slot’s role will be crucial to promote the defender into the team.
