Ben Jacobs has claimed that Edson Alvarez is one of the options in the midfield that Liverpool are looking at, to sign him for the next season.
With Bellingham seemingly out of the equation for Klopp to sign this summer, the German tactician is looking at other possible options to rebuild his midfield for the next season.
With already a list of midfield targets, there seems to be a new interest towards the Mexican by the Reds. Speaking on the LFC transfer room podcast, Jacobs discussed about Liverpool’s transfer plans for the next season.
He went on to say that it is important to communicate consistently with your transfer targets. He used Alvarez and Chelsea as an example of poor communication.
It was reported that Chelsea were interested in signing the midfielder but failed to make a move last summer.
Speaking of Alvarez, the journalist said that Liverpool have actually looked at the Ajax midfielder recently. The Mexican joined the Dutch side in 2019 and has won the league twice already. He has 62 caps for his country and has played in the recent World Cup.
Liverpool to sign Alvarez?
While talking about Liverpool’s interest in the Mexican, Jacobs stated the need to communicate with their targets frequently.
“The insiders I speak to at Liverpool always tell me one important point, that is that you have to have a consistent narrative. That means being honest with your plans.
Chelsea haven’t always been consistent, there are a few players out there, Edson Alvarez is one of them, that they had one message one day and then it changed.
He’s a player by the way that Liverpool have looked at. Chelsea wanted him, they made a bid, he didn’t turn up to training to force the move, it collapsed and Todd Boehly said that he’d be back for him, and he never came back,”
Alvarez a good fit in the PL for the Reds?
It is not a surprise that the Premier League is surely one of the toughest leagues to play in. Also, life in England is not very easy to adapt to. We have seen many players, who were great with their previous clubs, come in and struggle to make an impact.
Although Alvarez has looked talented in Amsterdam with Ajax, he has been described as ‘too slow’ by Marco Van Basten. The Mexican is a decent player but there are huge doubts as to whether he would suit the high-intensity gameplay that Liverpool plays.
Moreover, he has been critiqued by Wesley Sneijder as well. He previously stated that Alvarez rarely makes any ‘forward passes.’
It is evident that the Reds are struggling this season due to many factors and the main one being the lack of creativity in the midfield. Hence, it is debatable whether or not the Reds need Alvarez right now.
