Liverpool FC have reportedly quashed recent speculation surrounding an alleged £26 million bid for Sporting’s highly-rated centre-back, Goncalo Inacio.
Contrary to Portuguese reports claiming a formal offer, renowned transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has debunked the rumours, asserting that there are no concrete discussions between Liverpool and Sporting regarding Inacio’s transfer.
The 22-year-old defender, touted as one of Europe’s emerging talents in his position, has been a consistent presence for Liga Portugal leaders Sporting this season.
Liverpool’s interest in Inacio dates back to the summer, with earlier links to Chelsea’s Levi Colwill before the player extended his contract at Stamford Bridge.
Despite an apparent pursuit of defensive reinforcements, Liverpool refrained from pursuing alternatives during the summer transfer window, including Inacio and others like Micky van de Ven and Marc Guehi.
Goncalo Inacio to Liverpool – Just another Rumour
While recent reports (via Jorge das Transferencias) suggested a £26 million offer for Inacio, Romano clarified that the proposal lacks substance.
Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool’s manager, had previously downplayed the likelihood of signing a centre-back in January, emphasizing the scarcity of top-quality options available for purchase.
The club had been linked to Fluminense’s Andre Trindade as a potential midfield addition, but recent developments indicate Liverpool may not pursue the Brazilian.
With injuries affecting key defensive players, including Joel Matip‘s season-ending setback and absences of left-backs Kostas Tsimikas and Andy Robertson, club legend Jamie Carragher voiced his opinion, advocating for Liverpool to bolster their defensive ranks this January.
However, Klopp remains pragmatic, highlighting the challenge of securing a top-class center-half mid-season.
While Liverpool have a history of making impactful January signings, Klopp’s recent statements and Romano’s clarification suggest that the club may not be actively pursuing major acquisitions in the current transfer window.
This news brings clarity to the ongoing transfer speculations surrounding Liverpool and Goncalo Inacio, dispelling the notion of an imminent £26 million deal as Liverpool maintains a cautious approach to January business.
