Highly sought-after sporting director Max Eberl is reportedly in negotiations with both Liverpool and Bayern Munich for a potential role.
Eberl, aged 50, was dismissed from his position at RB Leipzig earlier this season amid rumors of Bayern’s interest in him.
Leipzig cited a “lack of commitment to the club” as the reason for parting ways with him, and Eberl has been considering a move to the German champions.
Max Eberl favours Bayern Munich over Liverpool
According to Sport Zone, Eberl has already reached agreements with both Liverpool and Bayern.
His preference is said to be joining Bayern, where he has a history as a youth team player and even made a single first-team appearance.
However, a period of “gardening leave” following his departure from Leipzig means he cannot immediately assume his new role.
The exact duration of this leave is not specified, but if a deal with Bayern falls through, Eberl has reportedly committed to joining Liverpool.
German outlet BILD suggests that Eberl leans toward Bayern despite “renewed interest” from Liverpool.
Nevertheless, there are still some uncertainties within Bayern’s leadership regarding Eberl, with CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen favoring Christoph Freund for the role.
Eberl is said to be “honored” by Liverpool’s interest, which might offer a smoother transition.
The Reds had appointed Jorg Schmadtke on a short-term contract earlier in the summer to fill the void left by Julian Ward’s departure.
While Schmadtke, a 59-year-old former goalkeeper, has facilitated the signings of players like Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo, and Ryan Gravenberch, his appointment was somewhat unexpected.
Schmadtke revealed that both parties have the option to end their relationship after three months and decide whether it makes sense to continue.
Said Schmadtke.“We agreed on a year of co-operation and agreed to see what would happen after three months. We sit down together, look each other in the eye and decide how to proceed.
Both sides are so sovereign and serious that the question is then answered – does it still make sense or not? It could be that we shake hands and part.”
