A report on Saturday night suggested that Liverpool are ready to turn to Bayern Munich winger Leroy Sane to replace Mohamed Salah.
Amidst this speculation, the ex-Man City man has revealed that he previously turned down a transfer to Liverpool.
The winger arrived from Bundesliga outfit, Schalke in 2016 and was an integral part of Pep’s side. However, he departed the prem to join German record champions, Bayern Munich in 2020.
Sane eyed by Liverpool to replace Salah
Recent reports as per The Mirror suggested that Liverpool are looking to replace Salah with Sane.
The Egyptian has been heavily linked to a move to Saudi Arabia. Even though a move in the final stages of the transfer window failed, the Middle Eastern club are determined to sign the 32-year-old winger.
Al-Ittihad, the reigning champions, bid an enormous fee of £150m, verbally. With the speculation surrounding Salah’s future, a record-breaking Reds move for Sane has been mooted.
Moreover, it needs to be highlighted that he came ever so close to joining the Reds.
“Yes, I was also talking with them. Jurgen was calling me too, talking to me. That was before I joined City.
He did a good job at [Borussia] Dortmund – I met him when he was there. He’s a good guy, nice guy – honest. He [has] worked well with Liverpool.”
Sane said.
The German still has 2 years of his contract left. However, reports suggest that he is in talks with the Bavarian club over a possible contract extension.
Also, it would go against regular transfer policy for Liverpool to pursue a player who will be 28 in January.
Salah’s replacement: a good choice?
On paper, Sane could be the ideal replacement for Salah at Liverpool. However, to replicate the consistent goal-scoring of the Egyptian is another question altogether.
Salah has scored 187 goals in 307 games for Klopp’s side. However, Sane has 117 goals in his career for all three teams he has played for.
One could argue that Salah is older than Sane but the fact is, there are very few in world football who could match Salah’s goal-scoring prowess.
