Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has spoken about how the addition of Darwin Nunez to the team has changed the playstyle of Mohamed Salah.
The Anfield giants are in super form as they won 5-1 against Toulouse in the mid-week clash in UEL. The attacking line produced a great performance for the spectators to enjoy.
And the main man of the Merseyside attack, Mohamed Salah again embarked his name on the score sheet with a 93rd minute goal.
It is quite true that since joining the club, he has been more of a goalscorer. As Roberto Firmino provided the outlet of a creative player as a false 9, both he and Sadio Mane got the freedom to run at the goal and score.
But in recent times, he has been more than just a goalscorer. And manager Jurgen Klopp has mentioned this change in his recent interview.
Klopp explains the change in playstyle of Mohamed Salah
The Reds boss spoke to reporters and BBC Sport quoted him,
“The young Mo was a super fast player. From the first day he had to do different things, he adapted extremely well, but the playmaker in that role was probably Bobby [Firmino] setting things up.
You don’t need two players who are deeper because you need players in the box and players to bring the ball over the line. Now it’s slightly different, especially with Darwin [Nunez] when he is playing. We have another speed player up there so that changed Mo’s position definitely.
He is smart enough to adapt to all these different things. It is a massive development since he arrived, but he was in all phases world class.”
With both Mane and Firmino leaving, the 31-year-old had to take up the responsibilities as the creative outlet as the senior player to facilitate new signing Darwin Nunez.
The Uruguayan is more of a proper no. 9 with physical attributes and immense goalscoring ability.
This season he has made 12 appearances assisting 4 times with an average of 1.8 key passes played per game.
But this does not mean he has stopped scoring. So far this season he has scored 9 goals and he looks eager to score more (stats via WhoScored).
Adapting to the team’s needs and changing playstyle accordingly is a task that only the players of the highest caliber can achieve successfully.
Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have been the ones to successfully execute that.
And to see Salah do so effortlessly proves that he definitely belongs to that group of greats.
An ardent football fan and a proud Red. I take immense pleasure in analyzing the intricacies of the game.
