Jurgen Klopp said that Liverpool must master the fundamentals before they can compete at their best, and the German manager fears that this statement may infuriate certain supporters.
When the Reds drew 0-0 with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, Klopp said in an interview with BeIN Sports that he noticed some positive signs from his Liverpool team, saying that the midfield worked well together and that both the offense and defense had found their footing.
What Jurgen Klopp said about the squad?
Kai Havertz’s goal was disallowed for handball, and others like Joao Felix and Enzo Fernandez also tested Alisson Becker. Although missing players like Virgil van Dijk and Trent-Alexander Arnold, Liverpool put up a strong defensive performance.
In fact, Liverpool needed to play that game to regain their best form. And according to Klopp, his team has to concentrate on doing the fundamentals well. The Reds manager said:
“Our pressing was okay in the beginning. Chelsea’s idea was to play in behind, we struggled twice, but then got used to that. I saw a lot of good things as well.
Midfield combining and connecting, it was fine. Up-front a good performance and the last line found their feet. How’s that? I know nobody wants to hear me say these kind of things but better you switch off then. Before we are really playing to our full potential again we have to make these kind of things and we will give our absolute all.”
Liverpool are set to face the Gunners this Sunday. Will the Reds keep on moving towards the ‘fundamentals’ as Klopp mentioned?
In light of Liverpool’s transformation, the German Boss is correct to advise disinterested fans to switch off
Although Liverpool fans are among the most fervent in the nation and expect nothing less than perfection from their side with each game, Klopp himself said that some fans could be better off leaving if they don’t want to stick around till the club gets the fundamentals right.
Some supporters will have to wait for Liverpool to go back to their best, which could easily take another season or two given how badly the Reds have battled this year. The Merseysiders will likely have to completely rebuild during the summer.
