Jurgen Klopp’s injury update prior to Premier League clash against Sheffield United has confirmed Joel Matip will be out for the rest of season, Andy Robertson though will be back.
The 2023-24 season will be a last for many things at Anfield. Jurgen Klopp has announced his departure at the end of the season.
The team has made it a goal to make the farewell memorable as they have already won Carabao Cup. The Merseysiders are also challenging for Europa League and Premier League title.
However, this season is also the last for a few players. Joel Matip, a faithful servant to the club, will be leaving this summer as his contract expires by the end of this season.
Thiago Alcantara, the midfield maestro‘s contract also runs out this summer and there has been no talks of extending it further.
Joel Matip Out, Andy Robertson Comes Back
A stalwart at the heart of the Liverpool defence, Matip has been a part of the team at some crucial parts of the club’s history.
When the Reds won the PL title in the 2019-20 season after 30 years, the Cameroonian played a major role. Even in the Champions League winning campaign of 2018-19, Matip had a big contribution.
But the defender suffered an ACL injury back on December and has been sidelined since. Even though he went through surgery and is currently undergoing rehabilitation, he is unlikely to play for the Anfield side ever again.
Prior to the PL clash against Sheffield United, boss Jurgen Klopp provided update upon the current status of the player. He said,
“Joel [is] running – he hates that! But he is able to run again, so that’s good.
I think since he got injured this is the best moment because it was very painful in the beginning, very painful for him [but] he got through that and now he is pain-free. But, that now all takes time so I don’t think the season is long enough for him.”
The German tactician also ensured that Andy Robertson, who suffered an ankle injury representing his nation, will be available. He could even feature against the Blades on Thursday evening.
“Yeah, and very important, by the way.”
Klopp stated.
An ardent football fan and a proud Red. I take immense pleasure in analyzing the intricacies of the game.
