Liverpool’s Spanish maestro, Thiago Alcantara, has been ruled out for the rest of the season after undergoing surgery on a hip injury.
The Spaniard returned from his injury in the game against Arsenal in the 60th minute.
After missing 8 games through the latest hip injury, he was expected to be helping Klopp and his side to the finish line as they faced the Gunners. But, the 32-year-old was not in the squad for the 7-goal thriller at Anfield against Tottenham.
It is now confirmed that the ex-Bayern man has undergone surgery related to his hip injury. He is now set to miss all of the Reds’ remaining games.
Thiago Alcantara out for the remainder of the season
The 32-year-old has missed 13 games this season due to injury and is now set to miss the remaining fixtures as well.
Thiago was not included in the squad for the Spurs clash. Moreover, Klopp did not mention any specific issue on his condition in the pre-Fulham press conference.
However, The Athletic now reports that the former Bayern man is now set to sit out the remainder of the season. The reason being that he would be undergoing surgery related to his hip injury.
The Spaniard initially sustained a hip injury before February’s Merseyside derby victory over Everton. Since then, he has been out for 10 successive games before playing Arsenal last month.
After that, he played as a substitute in victories over Leeds, Nottingham Forest, and West Ham last month. However, the form of Curtis Jones has been impressive and he has managed to keep Thiago on the bench with his performances.
Having continued to suffer from discomfort with his problem, Liverpool have decided to go down the surgical route, adding to Thiago’s lengthy list of injuries since his arrival at Anfield.
Has Thiago lost his charm at Anfield?
The former Barcelona man thrived in Germany and was considered one of the most skilled midfielders. With his arrival in 2020 to Liverpool, he has been able to adapt seamlessly. And he was one of the key figures in the squad, dictating the midfield for many important games.
His calm and composed presence was a main factor for the Reds but his injury records are not much impressive. It cannot be denied that when fit, the Spaniard has been an indispensable member of Klopp’s squad.
But his injury records are far from impressive. He has missed 56 games for Liverpool through injury, since coming to Merseyside.
With Thiago entering the final 18 months of his contract, a decision has to be made about the Spaniard’s situation. The likes of Stefan Bajcetic and Curtis Jones have put on some impressive performances in the midfield.
With Klopp looking to bring in new reinforcements for midfield over the summer, the question needs to be asked about the 32-year-old.
