Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konate has acknowledged that he is not yet the successor to Manchester United’s star defender, Raphael Varane, for the French national team.
Konate has established himself as a key figure in Liverpool’s defense since joining the club and is now a prominent player in France’s backline.
Raphael Varane, who has been considered one of the world’s best center-backs for several years, played a significant role in Real Madrid’s success, including four Champions League titles, and was instrumental in France’s 2018 World Cup victory.
While Konate has had the opportunity to learn from Varane, who announced his retirement from international football in February, the £34 million player (BBC) modestly stated that he is still a long way from matching Varane’s achievements and track record.
Konate on taking place of the Manchester United defender in French squad
According to Konate, taking up Varane’s mantle is one of his objectives, but he recognizes that he has much ground to cover before reaching Varane’s level.
The Frenchman said in an interview with Le Parisien:
“Having taken up the torch? No. Not yet.
This’ is one of my objectives but I am still far from everything that he has won, from his track record, from everything that Raphael Varane has succeeded.”
At 24 years old, Konate has been performing impressively for Liverpool, benefiting from the guidance of Jurgen Klopp and the experience of playing alongside Virgil van Dijk.
With Varane no longer an option for the French national team, all eyes will be on Konate to see if he can rise to the occasion.
Although he possesses the potential to excel for Les Bleus, it may take some time before he reaches the peak level that Varane achieved during his career.
The football world will be closely watching Konate’s progress in the coming years.
