Wataru Endo has emerged as a pleasant surprise for Liverpool since his £17 million signing this summer but Jose Enrique doesn’t see him starting for the Reds anytime soon.
Despite being relatively unknown initially, the Japanese international has been making a mark in the Premier League. However, there are still sceptics regarding his capabilities.
Jose Enrique recently shared his thoughts on Liverpool’s current situation on his YouTube channel, emphasizing the need for a new number six.
Jose Enrique on Endo
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Enrique, while Endo is a good player and was signed by Klopp for a reason, he doesn’t believe Endo can be a starter in the Premier League.
“We need a proper number six, obviously Endo is there, but I don’t think he can be a starter. He’s a good player, that’s why Klopp signed him, but he can’t be starting as a number six for us in the Premier League, we need a top top one the level of Szoboszlai or Mac Allister in that position,”
Jose Enrique.
Enrique expressed the opinion that Liverpool should target a top-quality defensive midfielder, citing the likes of Szoboszlai or Mac Allister as examples.
Enrique’s sentiment resonates with the idea that, despite Endo’s positive performances, Liverpool requires a proven, top-tier player in the number six position.
With Endo currently being the sole natural choice for that role in the squad, Enrique stressed the importance of securing a best-in-class player to enhance Liverpool’s chances of competing for the title.
While Endo has shown promise, he may not yet be at the level of a prime Fabinho, so acquiring a high-calibre midfielder is a priority for the club.
