Liverpool have been handed a financial blow after it emerged they won’t be taking part in the revamped 32-team FIFA Club World Cup in 2025.
FIFA hand Liverpool a huge blow
The revamped Club World Cup saw its entry requirements ratified in Jeddah at the weekend, with Liverpool missing out. The Reds won the competition in its current form in 2019 in Qatar after winning the Champions League. Moreover, the Reds thought they would participate in the competition to be held in 2-years in the USA.
However, at a FIFA Council meeting in Jeddah. Saudi, the decision they made back in March was approved. FIFA had decided to limit each country to no more than 2 representatives in the competition.
The new format of the competition will take place in July 2025 over 29 days. It would include the clubs that have won the Champions League between 2021 and 2024,
This would mean that Chelsea who won in 2021 would be the representatives from the PL along with Manchester City who won the treble last season. However, there would be an opportunity for Arsenal to qualify if they win the competition this time around.
Moreover, if Manchester City had won instead of Chelsea in Porto that night, Liverpool would have been guaranteed a spot. But now, there will be no Liverpool in the US for the revamped competition.
This has drawn criticism from many football enthusiasts when it was announced a year ago. The main factor is the extra pressure on the players being piled on top of an already hectic schedule. Especially in the English game, where the Premier League clubs compete for 4 competitions, considering they play in Europe and all domestic cups.
Moreover, this has been previously addressed by Guardiola and Klopp in recent years.
How would this affect the Reds?
This revamped club world cup would take place every 4 years and offer financial rewards. As per Guardian, the participation and subsequent success could be worth up to £50m.This move is initiated instead of the failed attempt at a European Super League, which 12 clubs opposed.
While all but Real Madrid and Barcelona have distanced themselves from the plan, the European Court of Justice will rule on December 21 whether or not UEFA and FIFA’s threat of sanctions to clubs wanting to form another competition was lawful, potentially kicking open the door to another move to launch a competition in the future.
Daniel Haddad, head of commercials at global sports advisory firm Octagon, spoke regarding the new competition.
“The development of other competition structures that involve other confederations is an interesting one. The FIFA Club World Cup from 2025, there is a very real possibility, I think, that if that tournament is a success then it becomes not just a once every four years competition.
The way it becomes a success is that it doesn’t become a mini UEFA Champions League pre-season type competition because the 12 European clubs are the only ones that can win it.”
