Colombia’s Semana, a respected media outlet, reported on the freeing of Luis Diaz‘s father, noting that his captors had taken all his valuables before releasing him.
Bishop Francisco Ceballos, who orchestrated the rescue, disclosed that Luis Manuel Diaz expressed a wish to renew his wedding vows to his wife, Cilenis Marulanda, as he lost his wedding band during the 13-day abduction.
Despite being abandoned at a roadside earlier, Cilenis, Diaz’s wife, was left behind, while Diaz was taken deeper into Colombia’s border territory and held by the left-wing ELN group.
Following his liberation and reunion with his family, Diaz, the father of the Liverpool footballer, spoke with his son.
He shared his desire to recommit to his marriage after losing his ring. Monsignor Ceballos, describing Diaz’s emotional state after being freed, mentioned Diaz’s request to re-marry, expressing their willingness to conduct the ceremony whenever they prefer.
Luis Diaz’s father wanted his wedding ring back
While Semana pointed out that Diaz’s captors had taken his belongings, including sentimental items like his wedding ring and other valuables, the circumstances surrounding the loss of the ring weren’t elaborated upon by Monsignor Ceballos. It was also revealed that Diaz had endured a knee injury during the abduction.
The bishop shared details of Diaz’s harrowing experience during captivity, mentioning the extensive walking Diaz was forced to undertake and the emotional moment of their reunion.
Diaz had walked continuously for several days during his 13-day captivity, enduring great physical and emotional exhaustion.
As for the rescue operation, Diaz had sensed the presence of helicopters nearby, which induced fear due to the potential risks involved in such a situation.
The release followed multiple failed attempts at rescue, with the ELN admitting responsibility for the kidnapping.
The ELN, a Marxist-Leninist group founded in the 1960s, has a history of abducting civilians.
Despite ongoing peace talks with the Colombian government, the group has continued to take hostages and make ransom demands.
Diaz clarified that no ransom was paid for his release, and his wife had made emotional pleas for his freedom.
She participated in marches and urged the captors to set him free, expressing her longing to have him back home.
