Jurgen Klopp has hinted that Wataru Endo may have an extended period on the bench, especially in Liverpool’s league campaign.
After Liverpool’s 3-1 victory over West Ham, Klopp was asked about the Japan captain, and he explained that Endo should be seen as a long-term project, given his limited playing time so far.
Klopp described Endo as a respectful and composed individual but suggested that this demeanor may have delayed his integration into the team during the initial two weeks.
However, Klopp noted that Endo is making progress and getting accustomed to Liverpool’s style of play.
Despite his age of 30, Klopp emphasized that Endo is not a short-term project and will eventually feature more prominently.
Jurgen Klopp on Wataru Endo
“He needs to get used to things here. Wataru is a super guy, very calm and very polite,”
The German told reporters in comments shared on Empire’s X (Twitter) account.
“That cost him the first two weeks maybe. That’s now getting there. He’s not dirty or whatever and wants to get people out of the way to get into the team but he’s every day improving.
You saw that today, he’s there and he will help us a lot. He will play games, start games and all these kinds of things. All good.
He had already three or four games for us in a very short period. That’s the only thing that counts, it’s not a short-term project.”
This statement might raise a few eyebrows among fans, especially considering Liverpool has younger talents like Curtis Jones (22) and Alexis Mac Allister (24).
However, Klopp’s approach with players like Fabinho, who took time to settle at Liverpool, serves as a reminder that the German prefers a patient approach when necessary.
Despite the absence of a natural holding midfielder, Klopp seems to have faith in Endo’s ability to contribute in that role, even though he hasn’t featured prominently yet.
It’s likely that Endo will have a more significant role as the season progresses, as Klopp sees his potential impact on the team’s dynamics.
