Liverpool legend Steve Nicol slams Liverpool for their poor display of performance against Atalanta in the Europa League quarter-final, disappointed with sloppy display and missed opportunities.
Steve Nicol Is Disappointed By Poor Performance of Liverpool Against Atalanta
Liverpool suffered a huge blow against Atalanta, displaying a poor performance at Anfield.
Steve Nicol, the ex-Liverpool player, was upset with the team’s lacklustre display, particularly calling out Darwin Nunez for his missed chances.
The Uruguayan star Darwin Nunez fumbled a golden opportunity from a perfect through ball by Curtis Jones very early in the game, which would have been a perfect start for the Reds to seal the deal in the Europa League quarter-final.
The English Giants Fail to Break The Italian Wall
There were some bright moments for the team such as Harvey Elliott’s display of performance still, the Reds failed to break through the Italian side’s defence.
Nicol said,
“He was trying to just dink it over the goalkeeper, but it looked so nonchalant, careless and sloppy. That really annoyed me the way he tried to do it.”
Other players like Kostas Tsimikas and Joe Gomez also underperformed, contributing to a disappointing overall team effort.
A European Night to Forget At Anfield For Liverpool
Overall Liverpool’s inability to be clinical in the final third cost them a Europa League quarter-final, amplified by the Nunez’s missed opportunity.
The Reds were slammed by the Italian side, a 3-0 defeat at Anfield is a huge one to take for the team and Jurgen Klopp in his farewell season.
Nicol’s frustration with Nunez was expressed with the statement,
“Nunez had a chance in the first-half and I was annoyed with the way he went about it”
Liverpool have to move on from this defeat and try giving their 100% effort to turn around this tie, which has happened before against Barcelona in 2019, the famous 4-0 victory at Anfield.
The question is can they pull the miracle off at an away ground?
