Manchester City secured their place in the semifinals last night by holding the German team at bay. Ryan Gravenberch, the midfielder for Bayern Munich, declined to respond when he was questioned yesterday night about rumors that he was joining Liverpool.
In Champions League play, Gravenberch’s team lost to Manchester City in the round of eight. The Dutchman was an unutilized replacement on Wednesday, although he did not participate in the 1-1 match.
After the game, Gravenberch was questioned about his connections to Liverpool, according to writer Christian Falk.
“Ryan Gravenberch didn‘t want to comment the interest of LFC,” Falk wrote on Twitter last night.
Ryan Gravenberch did not comment on Liverpool rumors
The 20-year-old would be best advised to maintain his silence as his squad struggled to compete against City. However, we’re sure to hear more about Gravenberch possibly going to Anfield in the future.
It wasn’t a huge shock that Gravenberch stayed on the bench last night. Thomas Tuchel has just started using the 20-year-old sparingly as was the case under Julian Nagelsmann. He was not given any playing time during the first leg at the Etihad. The Netherlands international doesn’t seem to be liked for whatever reason.
That will raise a huge red flag for some Liverpool supporters. Why should a player be taken into consideration for the Reds’ major midfield makeover if he isn’t good enough to break into this slightly slow Bayern side?
It’s a good question, but many athletes who made moves when they were younger have had difficulty breaking onto major league clubs. Gravenberch most likely wouldn’t be the first Bayern player to find the going difficult.
Some uncertainties around the Bayern player
It might undoubtedly be a sign that he might struggle at Liverpool as well. However, it appears to be more of a case of a young player being introduced to a new setting in a squad that isn’t performing to their regular standards.
Gravenberch is also in support of two players in Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka who have had success with Bayern. Perhaps it was always unreasonable for him to jump right in and start playing frequently in his first season. Some players could agree with it, but it appears that Gravenberch is not one of them.
His predicament has some similarities to that of Aurelien Tchouameni, a guy Liverpool passed over last summer. Tchouameni, who made a transfer at a young age, is likewise having trouble making an impression in the La Liga giant’s first-team. The Frenchman seemed content to continue, but it appears that Gravenberch is eager to depart. If not in public, then at least in private.
