Former Liverpool star, Roberto Firmino has opened up on his feelings within the Liverpool camp at the time of the ‘covid title’ and a fan remembers the bittersweet memories.
It was a moment every Liverpool fan had been waiting for all of their lives. Moreover, it was their first Premier League title and their 19th league title.
It was a title that the Liverpool team so richly deserved. Over the past seasons, the likes of Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez had come so very close to winning the title with the Reds.
However, it was of their own making that they missed out on the title under Brendon Rodgers.
Firmino and Co felt invincible at Liverpool during their title season
But the team that Klopp had assembled was one of the best teams in the modern era without a doubt. Being excellent from back to front, the team was destined to win the league title one season or the other.
With the likes of Mo Salah, Sadio Mane, and Roberto Firmino, the Reds formed a great attacking trio. The trio was one of the best in all of Europe and is remembered for its ruthless goalscoring records.
Moreover, having won the Champions League the season prior, a Premier League was coming. Also, as the season unfolded, the team felt invincible, as Firmino shares in an extract from his new book, via Mail.
“After 26 wins in 27 games, it was clear that the title was just a matter of time and the objective had already shifted: now we wanted to win the league undefeated. We discussed this among ourselves — and why not? After all, it was win after win every week, and that finishing line got closer with no sign or intention of slowing down.”
However, things began to change with an inexplicable 3-0 loss to Watford. And a UCL exit at the hands of Atletico Madrid came within a space of torrid few weeks.
But the real disaster was yet to come as the world learned about the Coronavirus disease. This meant that the loss to Atletico was the last time the Reds played in front of their fans.
‘The pandemic took away the fans’
Moreover, the league was called off as well temporarily. But when football was resumed, it wasn’t the way people had known it.
There were no fans allowed inside the stadiums and the teams played in an empty ground for months to follow.
“The pandemic took away the Liverpool fans’ chance to support us, share with us the moment they had waited for even longer than us; to release a cheer that had been trapped in their throats for 30 years. How sad that felt! How sorely they were missed!”
Firmino said regarding the lack of fans in the stadium.
Moreover, it would be painful to look at your team, who gave it their all to win a league title, and lift the trophy all on their own. The pandemic robbed the likes of Firmino and Mane of that moment.
Nevertheless, the fans could still be happy about the first Premier League trophy they won under Klopp.
