Marcelo Pitaluga, although yet to make his senior debut for Liverpool, has received a significant call-up from his home country, Brazil.
According to CBF.com, the 20-year-old goalkeeper has been named in the latest Brazil under-23 squad as they prepare for the 2024 Olympic Games pre-qualifying tournament in January.
The selected players will convene for a training camp in Sao Paulo next week to gear up for CONMEBOL’s Olympic qualifiers in Venezuela early next year.
The top two teams from these qualifiers will secure a place in the main event in Paris.
Marcelo Pitaluga to make his debut for Brazil soon?
Interestingly, Pitaluga has not earned a single cap for Brazil at any age level, as indicated by Transfermarkt.
However, he has been a reliable presence in defense for Liverpool’s under-21 team, conceding just six goals in as many games this season and keeping three clean sheets.
This follows Liverpool’s 2-1 defeat to Barrow in the EFL Trophy on Tuesday night.
Pitaluga has received praise from none other than his compatriot and Liverpool teammate, Alisson Becker, who is widely regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the world.
Alisson has worked closely with the 20-year-old during their time at Liverpool.
Pitaluga’s Brazil call-up is a clear indication that he’s making significant strides at Liverpool, and it could be a memorable moment for him if he gets the chance to represent his country at the Olympic Games next summer. This is certainly an exciting opportunity for the young goalkeeper.
