Luton Town winger Andros Townsend recently shared his insights on Liverpool’s evolving midfield, particularly praising Alexis Mac Allister for his “immense quality.”
Townsend highlighted the shift in Liverpool’s playing style, emphasizing the increased emphasis on ball-playing midfielders.
Liverpool’s Tactical Shift
Townsend noted a significant change from Liverpool’s previous reliance on workhorse midfielders like Henderson and Fabinho.
In the current season, the team boasts a more dynamic and versatile midfield, with players like Mac Allister possessing the quality to receive the ball, turn quickly, and initiate forward plays.
Townsend claimed on BBC Radio 5 Live when discussing how Liverpool play this season,
“Completely different.
Two years ago, they had the two number sixes in Henderson and Fabinho who were sort of the workhorses in the side. They didn’t really get forward as much.
They were prepared to sit back and wait for the counterattack and then cut out any counterattacks that happened and feed the ball back to the attacking players.
Whereas now, when the ball’s at the feet of a Gomez, Van Dijk or Konate, you’ve got three midfielders who all have the quality to get on the ball, get turned, play forward,”
Townsend Applauds Mac Allister
The Argentine midfielder, now Liverpool’s primary No.6, received acclaim from Townsend for his exceptional skills on the ball.
Despite concerns about Mac Allister’s recovery pace, underlying statistics suggest a successful season for the former Brighton man, who has become a linchpin in Liverpool’s midfield.
The Luton Town midfielder spoke on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Monday Night Club (via BBC Sport),
“You talk about Mac Allister as the No.6 now; he’s got immense quality. It’s so tough, you can’t really allow anyone to have the ball.”
Challenges Amidst Change
The departure of Fabinho and Henderson in the same transfer window raised questions about Liverpool’s defensive capabilities.
While the club continues to explore options for a more traditional No.6, it remains to be seen if any newcomer can persuade Jurgen Klopp to alter the current midfield dynamics.
Townsend’s Perspective on Facing Liverpool
Having faced Liverpool in a recent 1-1 draw, Townsend provided insight into the challenges posed by the revamped Liverpool midfield.
He described it as a constant bombardment, requiring opponents to be vigilant for the entire 90 minutes. With the attacking players, Townsend said:
“You have to be switched on for 90 minutes against Liverpool these days. You are constantly scanning. Jota looks to come inside. Salah roams and then Nunez runs in behind.
It’s bombardment. You haven’t got a moment’s rest.”
Liverpool’s midfield transformation, as described by Townsend, signifies a departure from the previous defensive-minded approach.
The team’s new emphasis on quality ball-playing midfielders, exemplified by Mac Allister, has contributed to their strong start in the Premier League.
