Newcastle vs Liverpool: Match Preview - Premier League 2023/24

Liverpool would be looking to continue their winning momentum when they would be traveling to St James’ Park to face Newcastle Utd.

The Merseysiders would be traveling to the North East along the Tyneside to face the in-form Magpies. Eddie Howe’s side lost their game against the Champions, Man City in a predictable 1-0 game.

But that shouldn’t take away the fact that they ran riot in their first game against Aston Villa, scoring 5 past them.

Moreover, Newcastle were on a dream run last season where they finished 4th, one place above Liverpool. This saw the Toons finish in a UCL spot for the first time in 20 years.

Meanwhile, the Reds finished 5th, out of the UCL spot for the first time since the 2015-16 season. This was one of their poor seasons as they failed to secure the Champions League spot.

Soon after the season, the Reds saw a major squad overhaul, with the captain, Jordan Henderson leaving the club among many others.

With the new recruits starting well for the club, it is to be seen whether they could build on the 3-1 victory against Bournemouth last time.

Team news for Liverpool against Newcastle

Liverpool have started the new season in great form with 4 points in the opening 2 games. As usual, Mo Salah has been terrific for Klopp’s side with him bagging an assist and a goal in the two games.

The same has to be said about Luis Diaz who has two goals in the two games. The fans love the Columbian’s gameplay who missed more than half of last season’s games.

The Magpies, however, are winless in their last 13 PL games against the Reds with their last victory coming back in 2015.

However, Liverpool have won their last 5 PL games against Howe’s men including the last 2 in a row. But they haven’t won three consecutive visits at St. James’ Park in their league history.

Liverpool are also on the longest unbeaten in PL history with a run of 13 matches. The last time they lost was at the Etihad against Man City where they suffered a 4-1 loss.

Liverpool might stick to the same back 4 as on the previous weekend. However, Klopp has stated that Konate might be a doubt for this weekend.

Hence, we could see either Matip or Gomez partnering with Van Dijk again.

Predicted XI for the Reds

Alisson, Andy Robertson, Virgil Van Djik, Joel Matip, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Wataru Endo, Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo, Mohamed Salah.

Anfield Home prediction

Liverpool have been in good form and their recent encounter with Bournemouth helped them regain their form. They have to start early against Howe’s men as the Magpies would be a tough opposition to break down.

Even though Newcastle lost to City, they would continue playing the way they started with Isak being the main man. With both teams relying on constant pressing, we could see a good battle in the middle of the park.

We would say that both teams would take a point away and get a 2-2 draw at St. James’ Park.
