Michael Owen on Klopp having an in-form player against Manchester City

Michael Owen believes that Roberto Firmino, who shone against Rangers, must start for Liverpool in their crucial matchup against Manchester City this weekend.

In the Reds’ 7-1 hammering in the Champions League on Wednesday night, Firmino scored twice and provided one assist. After scoring just 11 goals the previous season and nine the year before, the Brazilian has now tallied eight goals and four assists in 12 games across all competitions.

The £85 million arrival of Darwin Nunez in the summer seemed to push the 31-year-old to the sidelines, despite the fact that he is now in some of the finest goal-scoring form of his Liverpool career. Former Liverpool striker Owen thinks Jurgen Klopp has no alternative but to include him in the starting lineup for Sunday’s Premier League match against Man City.

The in-form Firminho

After Scott Arfield’s unexpected goal, Firmino equalised with a flicked near-post header from a corner kick by Kostas Tsimikas. After setting up Nunez to score the second goal, he made it 2-1 by converting Joe Gomez’s superbly weighted cross.

When Salah came off the bench to score the quickest hat-trick in Champions League history and Harvey Elliott joined in late, Liverpool took control of the game. Despite Salah’s contribution, Firmino’s accolades predominated the post-game discussion.

And the performance from yesterday was just the beginning. The rest of the team has struggled this year, but the Brazilian international has been outstanding. The fact that Jurgen wants to start him against the Sky Blues is actually not all that shocking. Liverpool have the momentum that they need. However, the match against the Sky Blues will be a big test. And the German boss would want to get everything right against Pep Guardiola.
