Liverpool’s U21s faced a tough challenge in their final EFL Trophy group game against Barrow, and there were some noteworthy developments in the match.
Kaide Gordon, the talented teenager, had a challenging journey since his debut for Liverpool’s first team as a 16-year-old in the 2021/22 season.
He had been sidelined due to a pelvic issue and an ankle injury but finally made his comeback in September.
In this game, he not only made his first start since his return but was also given the captain’s armband.
Despite the limited service he received on a difficult night in Cumbria, Gordon showed determination and some good touches during his 59-minute run-out, although he understandably looked rusty. The positive takeaway is that he was back on the pitch.
Mateusz Musialowski impressive display in EFL Trophy
Mateusz Musialowski, just 20 years old, has been part of Liverpool’s Academy for a while. However, it’s suggested that he should be testing himself at the senior level by now.
His performance in the EFL Trophy this season, with goals in previous matches, indicates that he might be ready for that step up.
He scored a stunning goal in this game, taking a one-two pass and firing the ball into the top corner from 25 yards.
Playing in a midfield role allowed him to showcase his skills and run at the opposition from deep positions.
Trey Nyoni, a recent signing from Leicester City, made his first appearance in the EFL Trophy after starting for the U21s against West Ham United.
Despite the physical midfield battle, Nyoni held his own and even received a booking for time-wasting, showing some game-management skills.
The starting lineup featured three 16-year-olds, including Carter Pinnington and Amara Nallo, who partnered at center-back.
Both players impressed with their solid displays, with Pinnington drawing attention for his composure, aerial ability, and distribution.
The goalkeeper, Marcelo Pitaluga, also had a strong showing until Barrow secured a late victory.
Liverpool’s U21s still have a chance to progress in the competition, and these young talents are making their mark on the team.
Liverpool is my Religion and Anfield is my Church. 17th May 1996 the date I had my blood coloured red. The one you love the most you can not live without it and that is football to me.
