Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has identified Sporting Lisbon star Goncalo Inacio as the ideal partner for Virgil van Dijk in central defence.
According to Correio da Manha, the German is convinced that the 22-year-old would be the perfect pairing in the central defence alongside the Dutchman.
Moreover, the reports suggest that the centre-back has the dream of playing in the Premier League.
The Reds also have been monitoring the defender for the best part of two seasons. In fact, Klopp has told the club’s hierarchy to secure his services when the transfer window re-opens in January.
Liverpool boss wants Gonacalo Inacio to partner Van Dijk in central defence
The German tactician wants Inacio to partner with Van Dijk and he sees him as a ‘priority’ for January. Inacio currently has a £52m release clause which does not put off Liverpool.
However, what might be a concern for the Reds would be competition from rival PL clubs. Inacio is also attracting interest from Manchester City, Manchester United and Real Madrid.
The fee should not be a problem as they should have enough after failing to land Moises Caicedo for a reported £111m.
Other clubs might not go into an excess of £40m for a defender at the midway stage of the season.
Especially with Manchester City already signing Josko Gvardiol for £77m, they would surely not go for another expensive defender in January.
The same would go for Real Madrid as they might not choose to spend huge on a defender in January.
Meanwhile, Man United are amidst a tough Financial Fair Play situation. Moreover, with the lack of owner investment, they might struggle to meet the financial demands of the player.
Would the CB fit the Reds?
Inacio would be a fine acquisition for Liverpool. He is a strong ball-playing centre-back who likes to clear his lines. He has also been effective in making ball recoveries and has a good physical presence.
Inacio would no doubt command a starting role and could offer good competition to Ibrahima Konate.
